THREE years after opening its doors to the public, Memories Function Centre at Wallsend has been named Australia's best wedding caterer.

Recognition has come through the Restaurant & Catering Association's 2008 Savour Australia National Awards for Excellence.

Seven hundred of the country's top restaurateurs, caterers and guests attended a carbon-neutral event late last month at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, where 36 awards were handed out.

The gathering was in line with the industry's new Green Table initiative aimed at encouraging restaurants, cafes and caterers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Earlier, more than 500 specially trained judges with a passion for food and wine put the more than 2000 award finalists through a totally independent, objective and rigorous review rating them against a standardised set of evaluation criteria.

The win for Memories Function Centre capped a big year for husband and wife team Ian and Leanne Pettigrew.

Memories was successful at regional and state level before winning the major prize.

"We know we do an excellent job, but to be named the best in Australia is just outstanding," Mr Pettigrew said.

Memories is an architect-designed wedding reception centre in Charles Street at Wallsend.

The decor has been described as "sophisticated elegance."
